Our Story
We’re Joel and Lauren Guenther, and along with our five children, we traded the wide-open plains of Nebraska for the beauty and adventure of the White Mountain region. What began as a big family move quickly became a shared dream—creating a place where families, friends, and explorers of all ages feel at home.
That dream led us to Highland House and Cottages. We fell in love not just with the property, but with the idea of building a family-run business that welcomes everyone—from seasoned outdoor adventurers to first-time explorers, from quiet weekend getaways to memory-filled family vacations.
When we’re not welcoming guests, you’ll likely find us hiking local trails, spending long summer days at the lake, visiting art museums and aquariums, or chasing the ocean breeze whenever we can. And wherever we go, our Goldendoodle, Gunner, is never far behind—usually leading the way with a wagging tail.
Highland House and Cottages is more than a place to stay; it’s an extension of our family and the life we love. We’re honored to share it with you and hope it becomes part of your story too.

The History of Highland House & Cottages
The Highland House and Cottages was formally known as Johnson's Motel and Cottages. Established in the early 1950s, it has been a destination for travelers seeking the beauty of Twin Mountain, New Hampshire. Originally a small family-run establishment, it quickly became known for its warm hospitality and access to the surrounding mountains. Throughout the decades, the motel has transformed, adding cozy cottages while preserving its charm and adapting to the desires of its guests. Historical records indicate that the property was once a popular stop for those exploring the White Mountains, offering a perfect blend of comfort and adventure. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of hospitality in this picturesque region, inviting new generations to create their own memories.

Stayed for one night prior to hiking in the white mountains. Great location, only 10 minute or so drive to WM National forest which was super convenient. The cottage was great, very clean and well stocked. Would stay again.

We arrived at the cottage after a long day travelling and visiting Mt. Washington. parked at the front of the cottage, grabbed our bags and went in to find a cozy, comfortable place to rest. The kitchen and appliances were perfect for our needs. Living room was comfortable with a large t.v. Bathroom is modern and hot water was spot on. the enclosed porch looks great for sipping wine and watching a piece of the world. I especially took to the simple, yet interesting New Hampshire decor. Thank you to our hosts for a great stay and wish we could have stayed longer!

We (3 adults and one child) stayed at Lauren and Joel's Highland House and Cottages. Their renovation efforts were visible, which pristine floors and brand new towels and bedding. It had everything we needed for a quick trip up north to celebrate the end of school- perfectly located between Storyland and Santa's Village, without the traffic you get closer to Conway. Beds and couch were incredibly comfortable, and the screened in front porch was great to sit in during a storm. There's a cute play area for younger children and a great trail that has amazing pond views.

Excellent stay at the cottage and would stay again if I’m in the area! Clean, easy to find, and had all of the amenities I needed. About 20-30 minutes from most hiking in the area so really convenient. A lot of local restaurants nearby. Was nice and quiet. Nothing but positive things to say!
